Sark is home to the smallest jail in the world. Built in 1856 this prison can only hold two people. Sark's police officer has the power to hold somebody for 48 hours, after which they must be moved to Guernsey for trial, or released.

In August 1990, André Gardes, an unemployed French nuclear physicist tried to single-handedly invade Sark. He was armed with a semi-automatic assault riffle and 260 rounds of ammunition. On arrival he placed signs which stated his intent to take-over the island at noon the next day. He was arrested by the island's volunteer Constable while sitting on a bench, changing the gun's magazine and waiting for noon. |
